Ventilation Filters

Action Target has been building shooting ranges since 1986 and has learned a thing or two about range ventilation. There are many imitators, but only Action Target has the knowledge to keep shooting ranges safe and clean both inside and out. One of the most important aspects of keeping ranges clean is filtration. Action Target offers two filtration configurations that adapt to the needs of any shooting range.

Bag Filtration

BAG FILTRATION

Action Target recommends combining a 22″–30″ bag filter and a 12″ HEPA filter to stop 99.97% of particles from entering the atmosphere. The bag filter captures the majority of particles and is longer lasting than a prefilter and mid-filter combination. This protects the HEPA filter from wear and helps it last longer. The HEPA filter is certified to exceed local and federal regulations. Bag filters offer many advantages over a prefilter/mid filter combination.

  • Require less frequent replacement due to more surface area that holds more particles
  • Require less storage space and are easier to move to the facility roof
  • Easier to replace
  • Less hazardous waste generated by reducing the number of filters needed

Triple Filtration

TRIPLE FILTRATION

The traditional filtration method combines a standard 4″ prefilter, a 12″ mid-filter, and a 12″ HEPA filter to stop 99.97% of particles from entering the atmosphere or recirculating back into occupied range areas. The first two filters capture the majority of particles, protecting the HEPA filter from wear and helping it last longer. The HEPA filter is certified to exceed local and federal regulations.

Bag Filters

Bag filters placed before the HEPA filter take pressure off the HEPA filter by collecting the majority of particles exhausted from the range. Bag filters are longer lasting and have lower through-life costs than a combination of a prefilter and mid filter. Action Target offers a variety of Total Filtration Services filters that are ideal for shooting range use. Our ventilation experts will work with you to identify the best option for your range based on volume, climate, and other factors.

LOWER THROUGH-LIFE COST
Better quality filters may require a higher initial purchase cost, however they end up saving in through-life cost. Better filters perform better over longer periods of time which requires less frequent replacement, reducing the cost of new filters and replacement and disposal fees. They also are more energy efficient, particularly over weeks of use. Our ventilation experts will work with you to determine the perfect filter that performs best in your region and provides you the best through-life cost.

HEPA FILTERS
Quality HEPA filters are necessary to properly clean air and protect the ceiling, walls, and area surrounding a shooting range from contamination. Action Target HEPA filters provide the perfect balance of cost, efficiency, and effectiveness in shooting range use.

TFS HEPA Filter

Microguard 99 HEPA Filter

  • Higher air flow while providing HEPA efficiency and no increase in resistance
  • Captures 99.97% of 0.3 micron size particles
  • Lower resistance, lower energy cost, and longer life
  • 50% higher capacity than standard HEPA filters
  • Longer life reduces disposal costs and contribution to landfills

Camfil HEPA Filter

Camfil Absolute VG-SR Hepa Filter

  • Specifically designed for shooting range use
  • Captures 99.97% of 0.3 micron size particles
  • Weighs less than 30 lbs, typically 20 lbs lighter than traditional metal frame HEPA filters
  • Crushable and incinerable plastic frame with no metal parts, making disposal easier
  • Lowest resistance, lowest energy cost, and longest life
  • Typically lasts 1.5 to 2 times longer than aluminum seperator style HEPAs
  • More than 400 sqft of media area, 1.5 to 2 times the use-able media area compared to aluminum seperator style
  • Longer life and lower weight help keep yearly hazardous waste levels at a minimum
  • Each filter is tested and includes written certification that it meets IEST HEPA filtration standards

PRE AND MID FILTER COMBINATION
Combining a prefilter with a mid filter before the HEPA filter takes pressure off the HEPA filter, helping it last longer than when used alone. Action Target offers Total Filtration Services filters that are ideal for shooting range use.

High Capacity Wire Backed Pleated Prefilter

  • Maintains MERV 13 performance in a full ASHRAE 52.2.2007 independent testing
  • Meets LEED Green Building criteria for minimum efficiency

LEGACY EXTENDED SURFACE RIGID CELL MID FILTER

  • Very low resistance reduces energy consumption
  • High dust holding company capacity
  • Light weight all plastic construction
  • Class 1 per U.L. Standard 900
  • Longer life reduces disposal costs and contribution to landfills

FILTER DISPOSAL
Action Target makes it easy to dispose of your contaminated filters and PPE. One of the challenges that shooting ranges face is how to take care of contaminated filters. Shooting ranges are responsible for all the waste it generates including verifying that it is properly disposed of or recycled. Hazardous waste collection and disposal are strictly governed through EPA and DOT regulations and Noncompliance could result in significant penalties, potentially even criminal. A waste generator’s liability never goes away. Action Target will pick up and recycle HVAC and DCU filters for members of the Metals & Range Supplies Program. Key Facts About Filters
Every range is responsible for determining that their waste is hazardous. The industry has found that used filters are contaminated with lead and are considered hazardous. Here are some things to remember about your filters.

  • Knowing their waste is hazardous, they are considered a hazardous waste generator. They must, by EPA (state and federal) law, manifest the waste, and are directly responsible for the appropriate handling, transportation and disposal of waste at a RCRA approved site. There are additional compliance requirements based on how much waste a site generates on a monthly basis.
  • A typical range generates approximately 20-40 cubic yards of hazardous waste a year.
  • Most range operators think they are disposing of waste properly, but if the hazardous waste disposal company is incorrectly disposing of the waste the responsibility falls on the range.
  • According to a NSSF compliance officer, ranges spend $20-30K/year for disposal if they are handling their waste legally.

Approved, Reliable Disposal
Action Target uses approved disposal procedures to help ranges avoid fines from government agencies and have confidence that their filters are being handled appropriately.

  • RCRA (Resource Conservation and Conservation Act) approved
  • OSHA and EPA compliant
  • We will pick up the filters from your range within two weeks of the pickup request.
  • We provide documentation that the filters will be properly disposed, protecting you from potential fines.

Low Cost Disposal
Disposal of contaminated filters can be very expensive. Action Target’s method keeps the cost of disposal lower and passes the savings on to you.
